Yannis Caloghiorou

Yannis D. Caloghirou is Professor of Economics of Technology and Industrial Strategy at the National
Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and Director of the Laboratory of Industrial and Energy
Economics . He is Head of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit at the NTUA and research
associate in the Network Management & Optimal Design Lab at NTUA. In addition, he was chairman
of the Scientific Council of the National Documentation Centre (EKT), the national infrastructure for
scientific documentation, online information and support services on research, science and
technology. He served as co-Rapporteur of the EU High-Level Policy group on the Economics of the
European Research Area and was member of the Governing Board of the European Network of
Excellence DIME (Dynamics of Institutions and Markets in Europe).
Prof. Caloghirou has a joint background in engineering and economics and he is teaching various
courses in economics, management, strategy and public policy both at the undergraduate and the
postgraduate level. He is leading two research groups at the Laboratory of Industrial and Energy
Economics at the National Technical University of Athens (LIEE-NTUA). The first is active in the field
of Innovation Studies and in particular in the study of business strategy, knowledge-based
entrepreneurship and public policy in the process of technological and organizational innovation.
The second group focuses on the Strategic, Economic and Technological Analysis of the Information
Society and the Knowledge-based Economy.
He has written extensively on topics related to his research and has spoken as an invited speaker to
a wide variety of audiences at professional and policy meetings as well as Universities, international
and national conferences and other settings. In addition to other scientific writings he co-edited two
books on European Collaboration in R&D: Business Strategy and Public Policy (Elgar, 2004) and
Knowledge Flows in European Industry (Routledge, 2006).
Prof. Caloghirou has served in top policy-making positions in the Greek Government, first as
Secretary General for Industry at the Ministry of Development (2000-2002) and then as Secretary for
the Information Society at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (2002-2004). He has also sat in a
number of relevant EU and national High Level Advisory and Policy Groups
